Speaking to sensitive issues like “Poverty” will mostly affect those who are poor in spirit, mind and body. Yet we are all deficient in one or all of ...these conditions but the image we project is typically judged prejudiciously in areas of health, education and welfare. For example, no one is listening to the homeless person unless you are interested in living outside of commercialism. Yet, the homeless person without a pot to pee in and a window to throw it out of could well be rich in morality with a sense of efficacy greater than the richest man on earth but how would we know?
For Na Kanaka aka Hawaiians living in Hawaii within this artificial contemporary society that the intruder by design has created, leaves Na Kanaka at a measurable disadvantage on a vertical scale of material wealth as expressed in our day to day living. The morality and ethos of our Kanaka lifestyle is often unappreciated and discounted by those on the upper end of the social ladder as being quaint, traditional or less than. This being the result of a polarity where Na Kanaka find ourselves living in an opposite pole from which the intruder dominates our resources by limiting our access to health, education and welfare. Think not then think again.
Understanding any problem in solving unequal shares distribution of perceived wealth amortized over a varying population is best addressed by reducing those fractional differences to its lowest common denominator. If you agree to this simple form of deductive reasoning then when speaking to anything about Hawaii its geographical placement dominates whatever linear line of reasoning you might have; that being Hawaii is the most isolated place on the planet being 2,000 miles from the closest land mass. This glaring fact cannot be denied.
The second suggestion of rationale thinking would beg the question, “Who owns the land out here in the middle of nowhere?” The logical answer would be, “Whomever first arrived in Hawaii and has maintained their physical presence by still occupying the land would own the land simply by the notion of possession.” Thatʻs linear thinking and the linear thought process suggest one condition in logical order produces another logical outcome.
That being said, no one argues that Hawaiians discovered Hawaii and that Hawaiians created their own nation under the banner of the Kingdom of Hawaii that was recognized by other nations as a documented fact in the many treaties signed between The Kingdom of Hawaii and other sovereigns at their highest level. Simply put sovereignty is sovereignty, treaties are treaties, and nations to nation is between and among sovereigns. The United States of America recognizes kanaka sovereignty as expressed in the US Congressional Act of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920 where the US recognizes the decedents of those Hawaiians who never relinquished their sovereignty.
This aforementioned recognition that already exists is nation to nation among sovereigns. The US Federal Government already recognizes us but the real question is, “Do Na Kanaka recognize the Federal Government?” Compounding the problem is the 50th State of USA which accepts the responsibility of the US Federal Government but fails time and again to measure up to any sense of balance when effectively dealing with Na Kanaka issues and the US Federal Government in terms of beneficiary benefit and entitlement.
When na kanaka take appropriate efficacious action in managing our own affairs by developing infrastructure to serve our nation, that being the Kanaka Maoli population then and only then are we truly a recognized sovereignty.
This infrastructure, IMO, would suggest trade mechanisms to compete globally by creating a real industry where we produce goods and services to meet our demand and exporting the surplus with our central bank to manage our financial transactions to sustain ourselves in this competitive modern world. In order for this to happen we need to remove those obstacles and people in our way that impede our forward progress. Things like OHA, DHHL, KSBE, QLCC and the like that need to be overhauled or hauled out to better serve the beneficiaries that these agencies were created to serve in the first place.
So whatʻs the first thing we need to do? We need to remove ourselves from the state of confusion, immediately.

Eo!!! E Kupa'a , Kupono , Ku Ha'aheo Lahui Hawai'i ame Na Kia'i o Ka Aina!!!
Jai Jungly
this posting is one of the most comprehensive and understandable descriptions of the Mauna Kea movement (that even goes further) than I have ever seen. For you...r enjoyment -Margaret Leahy-Conner
Some people say to me, 'why are you in this Mauna Kea thing? How does this have anything to do with you?'' I want to take a few moments to name some of the answers. The media has framed this situation as a struggle between science and tradition. This is incorrect. Line up any ten of the Hawaiians leading the movement and nine of them will have PhDs. I know these people. They are highly educated and deeply scientific. This struggle is actually between science and business. Science teaches us the importance of watershed, biological diversity, and habitat. None of us can survive without these things. And here stand the Hawaiians laying down their lives to protect their watershed, biological diversity and habitat. When an organization is willing to trample over thousands of people to achieve their goal, that is not science, it's business. When a government arms itself against its own unarmed citizens, that is not science, it's business. We have come to a critical juncture as a species. All of us need to take stock and decide where we stand. Business has no end to its appetite. Business will take every tree and every drop of water. Business will destroy every landscape to extract what lies beneath it. Business puts a price on everything, including children. Business tells us that if we stop business, we will all die a terrible death in chaos and misery. The truth is, business must begin to take no for an answer. Some things are not for sale. Some things are not for development or financial gain, human entertainment or other marketable agendas. Some things are for watersheds, for beauty, for biological diversity, for habitat, for prayer or wonder. The Hawaiian people know this truth. All indigenous peoples know this truth. In all the centuries of their suffering as business has attempted to eradicate them, indigenous peoples have continued to cry out to all of us the true science of life. It is not because indigenous people are somehow better or different from other people. We all began as indigenous, it's simply that the indigenous peoples alive today have not forgotten the truths we all once knew. I stand with Mauna Kea because this, the tallest mountain on earth, is calling us all to remember that we cannot live without our mountains, they sustain us and provide for us. I stand with Mauna Kea because she calls us all to employ everything we are and everything we have to participate in turning the tide. I stand with Mauna Kea because the people who are standing on Mauna Kea are showing us how to choose life. Together we rise.

<>"Because of the traditional ecological knowledge held in Hawaiian language archives, we were not limited to the observations from the earliest Western natural...ists forward, but from 1,000 years earlier. These archives, which noted historian Noelani Arista of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and we conclude is the largest single indigenous-language written archive in the world, became essential to our exploration of the history of landscape change in Hawaiʻi.
Through a combination of agricultural modeling, archaeological databases, modern ecological reconstruction techniques, global agroeconomic data, and that huge archive of traditional Hawaiian ecological descriptions predating first Western contact, we were able to follow the landscape history of Hawaiʻi back to the times before humans. We learned that, as in almost all places where people live, the Hawaiʻi of 1,000 years ago bears almost no resemblance to what we see today. We also uncovered findings about traditional Hawaiian lifestyle, such as how to sustain a population comparable to today while maintaining a majority of the landscape as forest and retaining all the ecosystem services that the forest provides. Such revelations may provide a pathway to a future of global sustainability for the planet—all thanks to a Hawaiian cultural renaissance that began in the 1970s and continues today."<>

UPDATE: How did Susan Ballard become HPD Chief of Police? A commission, but she gets her orders from the MAYOR!! That's why she doesn't allocate her manpower pr...operly! HPD is now Caldwell's revenge squad for exposing his corruption with Sherwoods. She's letting Caldwell pull HPD away from fighting crime on the streets to punish kia'i when she should honestly tell him, "Sorry. We have a police shortage and I don't have anyone to spare for non-violent concerns!" That would be the responsible thing to do whether or not she supported kia'i. She said in the paper she doesn't even have enough enough cops to investigate stolen property!
