His father was Kamehameha a Makaula, a seer, and knew about the foreigners who would come to the Hawaiian Islands.

Kamehameha III - Kauikeaouli had also adopted his cousins who became his sibling's due to the adoption by his father. They were Hueu Davis, Kale Davis, and Peke Davis.
Kamehameha II - Liholiho died in 1824 in England.
Kamehameha III - Kauikeaouli was a child still when he became King, and was under his stepmother Kaahumanu, and his stepfather Kalanimoku who had married his mother Keopuolani, the widow of Kamehameha.

1847 - Nations Looking to Assume the Hawaiian Kingdom:
The Nations saw the Hawaiian Kingdom as a opportunity to convert the nation into a colony serving them. They saw the business opportunities of fishing, sugar plantations, etc.
It was proposed that the natives would be mere occupiers and Great Britain, etc. would be the real owners of the lands.
The nations documented in this SANDWICH ISLANDS article which is posted below in the reference section and https://iolani-theroyalhawk.blogspot.com/2019/11/reasons-for-mahele-in-sandwich-islands.html :
