This is all assumptions, I believe and Amelia would know more. I per say do not like Kuhio at all because of the Hawaiian Homestead Act of 1921, as to when he came home from Africa I believe the hunt started as well as the coral of people. Not sure gattah talk to Amelia. The Royal Order.. I tend to stay far away. Just not into all that feather stuff. But, I'm glad we have it. I will try to search the question out.

PRINCE DAVID KAWANANAKOA, Descendant of Kings. The death of the late David
Laamea Kawananakoa Kahalepouli Piikoi in 1908 marked the passing of a noted
personality and descendant of Hawaiian royalty. Known in public life as Prince
David Kawananakoa, the career of the late Prince linked the bygone era of the
monarchy of Hawaii with the present-day activities of the Territory. When
Hawaii was annexed to the United States, Prince David became active in
territorial politics, working for the welfare of his own people and for the
country of which they had become a part.
Prince David was born Feb. 19, 1868, at Kaalaa at the mouth of the Pauoa
Valley, Honolulu, on the old homestead of Kapiolani, queen-consort of the late
King Kalakaua. He was the son of High Chief David Kahalepouli Piikoi and the
Princess Kinoiki Kekaulike, who, with her two sisters, Queen Kapiolani and
Princess Poomaikelani, belonged to the ancient line of Keawe, King of Hawaii;
at the time of her death in 1884, she was Governess of Hawaii.
Prince Kawananakoa descended from royal ancestry of both Hawaii and Kauai.
He was the great-grandson of King Kaumualii, last King of Kauai, and was
created a Prince of the Kalakaua Dynasty by the reigning sovereign at the
time, King Kalakaua. High Chief David Kahalepouli Piikoi, his father, was the
son of the High Chief Piikoi and High Chiefess Kekahili, the latter being the
sister of Kapaakea, father of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani, thereby
making the late Prince second cousin to the King and Queen. Princess Kinoiki
Kekaulike, his mother, was the daughter of High Chief Kuhio and Princess
Kinoiki, daughter of King Kaumaualii, the last independent ruler of Kauai.
King Kaumaualii married the Princess Kapuaamahu, his half-sister, their mother
being Queen Kamakahele. Prince David’s grandmother, Princess Kinoiki, was
called “Niaupio,” meaning that she was the issue of two high chiefs, the
highest rank known in Hawaiian genealogy; Prince David’s grandfather, Kuhio,
was a son of Laakea, a High Chief and descendant of Queen Kalanikauleleiaiwi,
a Queen of Hawaii.
Prince David was educated under the late Alatau Atkinson, at St. Alban’s
College, and then at Punahou, going later to St. Matthew’s Hall, a military
school at San Mateo, Calif. After this he was sent by King Kalakaua to the
Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, England, where he was a student for
several years. He traveled extensively with his brother, the late Prince Kuhio
Kalanianaole, who, at the time of the Prince’s death, was Delegate to Congress
from Hawaii. The two brothers attended many of the royal courts of Europe.
In 1883, when King Kalakaua was crowned, the Prince and his two younger
brothers, Keliiahounui and Kalanianaole, were created Princes of the Crown so
that they would be in line of succession to the throne of Hawaii. After the
death of King Kalakaua, the brothers resided with the widowed Queen Kapiolani
at Waikiki. Prince David was a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Order of
Kalakaua and also a Member of the Privy Council of State under Queen
Liliuokalani.
In 1900 the Prince entered the political life of the new Territory and
became the Democratic candidate for Delegate to Congress, running against
Colonel Samuel Parker, Republican, and Robert Wilcox of the Home Rule Party;
the latter was elected. The Prince was a delegate to the Democratic Convention
in 1900, and, until his death, was interested in the political life of the
community.
Prince David Kawananakoa married Miss Abigail Wahiikaahuula Campbell,
daughter of the late James Campbell, at San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 6, 1902.
They had three children, Abigail Kapiolani, David Kalakaua and Lydia
Liliuokalani. The Princess Kawananakoa and her children are living in Honolulu.
Prince Kawananakoa died at the Stewart Hotel, San Francisco, California,
June 2, 1908. His body was brought back to Honolulu and, after lying in state
at the Palace, now the Capitol, was buried June 21 in the Royal Mausoleum,
Nuuanu Valley, with all the ancient ceremonies accorded the royalty of Hawaii.

- Off-hand, what I remember is that Kamehameha V (Lot) created this royal order in 1865 to protect sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. One had to do their genealogy and descend from na ali'i; they have a genealogist that confirms it.
It kinda went underground for a while and then was later recognized as a legitimate organization. Today there are two groups; one broke away and became a corporation while the other is still the original order that dates back to 1865.
I guess I should dig deeper to know the particulars you've asked.

Excellent question,
The Order was created in 1865 by Kamehameha V by royal proclamation. It is also my understanding that the Constitution at the time authorized the creation of a Knightly Order, but I have never seen this document. The sovereign of Hawaii was always the head or Grand Master of the Order. This was the case from Kamehameha V down to Queen Lili'uokalani.
With the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani in 1893 I believe the Order still recognized Lili'uokalani as the legitimate and rightful sovereign, however, I am sure this was still a very confusing time for all Hawaiians. During this time the Provisional Government considered the Order a treat to their national security, and suppressed the Order. As such, the Order was forced to exist as a secret society. The Order was restored to public view in 1903 by Prince Kuhio after Hawaii became a territory and the Order was no longer suppressed.
I am sure Kuhio and other Hawaiian leaders discussed the issue with Lili'uokalani and that the decision was made that Kuhio not only restore the Order, but also act as its first Ali'i 'Ai Moku (Grand Master) in place of the disposed Queen. As a recognized prince and heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii, there really was no one else who could restore the Order and act as its new Grand Master.

- I am a decendent of John H. Wise who went to prison for treason and I have been wondering for so long what and why is it taking so long for hawaiians to get their lands back and become a soverign nation once again. Is this because of laziness, unconcerned or just don't care anymore on our parts it seems like we all have been so involved in researching everyone's heritage to see who got the correct heritage to the king and queen and not enough has been done in trying to get the land back. no matter what we are all ohana

if you've been involved in researching as long as some of us, normally, many would not want to share any information........i just wonder why the heck noone followed up on Queen Liliuokalani's issues.....even in her Will she maintained she did not sign a trust......I wonder about my own ohana for not exposing any of this crap sooner......
the crap is that a branch of family which was adopted did cause big time pilikia making agreements with KUHIO and KAWANANAKOA..........and she was not descendants of the true trustee..........now, this project is being worked on.......... and that info in part has been shared only with select people who are not necessarily ohana.....
"we are all ohana" is a lazy copout and disregarding the fact that direct lines exist.

Kamehameha had 10+ documented wives.
Kamehameha II had 8 documented wives.
Kamehameha III had 4 documented wives. He had several hanai children and several stepchildren documented. Recently someone claimed direct, documentation now proves it.
Kamehameha IV had 1 documented wife.
Kamehameha V was unmarried.
King Lunalilo was unmarried.
King David Kalakaua had 2 documented wives. He had 2 documented children and 3 adopted children (Kahanu (k); Rose (k), and a yet to be verified adopted son) of which the Kawananakoa's are NOT a part of.
Queen Liliuokalani had 4 documented husbands (Kaumauma, Koolau, Maulili, John Dominis).
She said the following were here children/hanai: Abigail/Abigail Maikai/Kapooloku/Kapapoko/Poomaikelani/Princess Poomaikelani; Kaaumoana/Luka aka's; Kaeha opio(w); Ioane (k); Kamukai (k); Wahie (k); et. als.
Princess Likelike had 1 documented husband and 1 documented child named Kaiulani/ Princess Kaiulani. The claimed descendants of Cleghorn are NOT related to the Kalakaua, Liliuokalani lines. They are called the ILLEGITIMATE children of Cleghorn, a Mason/Freemason. They have ties to Treasonous person Sanford B. Dole, one of the many genocide activists of the period.
Princess Poomaikelani has descendants, which is where our families come in. There are documented others.
Princess Poomaikelani had children: Samuel (k); Alapai (w); Haili/Kaili/Kalama (w) and stepchildren. Her husband Iona Piikoi was married previously and there are other children who were defrauded by the Kuhio, Kawananakoa families.
Princess Kinoiki a sibling of Queen Kapiolani, wife of King Kalakaua; sibling of Princess Poomaikelani had 3 sons: Edward, Kuhio, and Kawananakoa.
Prince Edward lived with Princess Poomaikelani and mysteriously died at age 18.
Prince Kuhio, a treasonous person was another who married a Kahanu (w) who married into the Woods family. Descendants of Kahanu (w) exist in Aetearoa.
Prince Kawanankoa, another treasonous person has a questionnable lineage who continues genocide activities, claiming lands that they have no rights to........they have changed their names from Ellerbrock to Kawananakoa; Lambert to Kawananakoa, etc.
There are many unresolved issues, which reveals that this is truly the CRIMINAL MECCA of the U.S., genocide issues (includes wrongful imprisonment of many including your ancestor John H. Wise, et. als., and ramifications are ongoing.

Kaleo et. als.--- are you aware that Analu Josephides is a suspected Russian informant operating in the Hawaiian Islands? CORRECTION 9/09/2012 - Princess Poomaikelani was married to IOELA/JOELA son of Alapai Kahekili Luluhiwalani who was the son of Kalola first cousin of BERNICE PAUAHI who married several including CHARLES REED BISHOP.
Princess Poomaikelani WAS NOT MARRIED TO IONA PIIKOI......PIIKOI was the father of the three (3) Kawananakoa; Kuhio; and Edward. Their MOTHER was Princess Kinoiki.
Princess Poomaikelani was a sibling of Queen Kapiolani and Princess Kinoiki.
Princess Poomaikelani's daughter Haili/Kaili/Kalama married Kaluakini who was the hanai father of Queen Kapiolani.
Queen Kapiolani was the hanai sister of my grandmother Elikapeka Kaimiola Kaluakini. She was the great grandaughter of Queen Liliuokalani and she married the grandson of the hanai daughter of Queen Liliuokalani who was the true Trustee of Queen Liliuokalani.
My grandmother was adopted by her own grandmother and King David Kalakaua's son Kaopu/ Kaopumomona/Kolomona Kaopumomona.
The Kawananakoa's: Abigail Kawannakoa was adopted and was documented as not being David Kawananakoa's family, she was an ELLERBROCK. Some of the other claimed Kawananakoa's are LAMBERT'S who changed their name to Kawananakoa, etc.
It was a criminal setup that the "purported" Constitution signed by Queen Liliuokalani named the two (2) Princes Kawananakoa and Kuhio Kalanianaole as the next in line...........If you look at the legal notices put out by King Kalakaua, the Princes Kawananakoa and Kuhio Kalanianaole were listed as the LAST to succeed.
Princess Poomaikelani died in 1895 and she/and her family were the TRUE successors based on the listing............funny how the Archives hides her picture and everyone needs to request for it.......funny how the move is to hide the facts...............funny how they hide the facts that Queen Kapiolani denied that she deeded the lands to the Princes.......that information was found in the aged newspapers.....Queen Kapiolani was the administrator of lands for Princess Poomaikelani whose daughter Haili/Kaili/ Kalama went to Kalaupapa, Molokai as a Kokua/helper for her husband Kaluakini, the hanai father of Queen Kapiolani. Kaluakini's mother and King Kalakaua's son legally adopted my grandmother Elikapeka Kaimiola Kaluakini.
Kokua's/helpers could remain with their loved ones on Kalaupapa, Molokai providing they submitted to EXPERIMENTATION..............a genocide issue.

Prince Kuhio tried to declare her to be incompetent, a crazy person. Queen Liliuokalani maintained that she did not sign a Trust Deed with the haole/foreigners. Prince Kuhio took an out of court settlement to the claims of Queen Liliuokalani after she died in 1917. Prince Kuhio and Prince Kawananakoa were treasonous persons, were Masons/Freemasons part of a group who helped to remove Queen Liliuokalani from her position. Both Princes, although listed and schooled as Princes, they were relatives of Queen Kapiolani and were not the descendants of King David Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Unresolved Issues

Two cents. The Hamilton-Hawaiian library up at UH Manoa have a copy of the "Statues of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I : Instituted by Kamehameha V 1865," it was published by Black & Auld, Honolulu in 1874. (15 pages x 15 cm).
They also have a broadside (36 x 16 cm) of the Decree to establish the Royal Order of Kamehameha I dated April 11, 1865, the first named members are attached.

As to HRH Kuhio's vested authority on May 13th, 1903 with others in reorganizing the Royal Order of Kamehameha from his home, it is known he gave a midnight public proclamation from the Kamehameha statute near Ali'iolani Hale on Kamehameha Day in 1904 the numerous online Hawaiian newspapers in both English but most especially Hawaiian language may provide clues in their following day printed versions. It would take time to research same but may well provide fruition?

E Pua that mandate assumedly came from Article 35 of the 1864 Constitution of His Majesty Kamehameha V on August 12th of that year. Quote:
"All Titles of Honor, Orders, and other distinctions emanate from the King."
(It appears previously as Article 37 of the 1852 Constitution), and Article 35 of the subsequent Bayonet Constitution & on the draft of the 1893 Constitution.
On the page 221 footnotes of Kuykendall's "Hawaiian Kingdom 1874-1893, The Kalakaua Dynastism," he refers to the Order of Kapiolani as being a private award given at the behest of the King until it became officially recognized quote:
'The "Order of Kapiolani" was finally instituted, as an official Royal Order under sanction of the constitution of the Kingdom, in a meeting on January 31, 1883. The minutes of that meeting contain the statement: "The decorations of this Order given by His Majesty previous to this meeting were duly confirmed."
Ralph Kuykendall additionally noted:
"Kalakaua instituted three other Royal Orders : Order of Kalakaua (1875), Order of the Crown of Hawaii (1882), Order of the Star of Oceania (1886) ; previous to his reign only one Royal Order had been instituted in Hawaii, namely, the Order of Kamehameha I (1865), by Kamehameha V."

Be super careful, as to where one is going with this..there is much modernist that will debunk 'Kapiolani' and her descendants...as one proceeds there was also the makaainana that flipped under so that the hands turned upright and so very pinkish with other nations.
One does not want to loose your standing with your people and be less than in the world!
And iritate those that would do anything to be righteous in seat of power. This is very important to get because of the recent political government changes that is spinning in a phenomenal way.
I've been an Auld for too long! My grand parents continued caustiously and went to their graves in service to people in their time.
